I am a journalism graduate, I am a dreamer, I love fashion, I am messy, I am in love... and I find it really hard to resist a Starbucks white mocha with cream. If you think that we could be friends, welcome to my blog :) I'm Dani, and I graduated from De Montfort University in May 2009 after three wonderful years studying Journalism and English Literature.... and one day, I WILL be a magazine editor.! I'm used to the blogging world, but this blog has been set up especially to keep track of my journalism applications, my successes, my failures... However, I'm willing to let you in on a little bit of my wonderful life too........ enjoy the ride!

Insight magazine: Day 1

First things first: I love it!!!

I walked in this morning with completely no idea of what I was going to be in for. But I was greeted by a small office, smiling faces and my own desk. Insight magazine distributes 5,000 copies of their weekly free mag, and has a readership of 15,000. And all of this is created by one editor, two creative writers, one designer and a handful of sales.

I was introduced to the magazine and then set my first task. Because it's a free magazine, the most important thing is to sell the space. The editorials we write are to promote the space, and you have 'generals' - a general article where businesses aren't mentioned, set on a page to accompany adverts of the same subject, and 'editorials' - articles promoting the business, which can range from 250-500-700-2000, depending on how many pages the business has bought. This editorial is then sent back to the company to proofread and check to see if they are happy with it, before we make any neccessary changes and it goes off to design.

My first task was to write a 500 word general on child's toys and gifts, which was really fun. By the time I knew it, it was lunch time and I was off to subway. In the afternoon, I spent 2 and a half hours reading out TV listings to L on design, which was completely boring but fun at the same time.

I was wearing black trousers and my new flowery top with a black cardigan, which had only taken me about two hours to decide on the night before, and I was relieved to find that the dress code is pretty casual and everyone dresses smart yet comfortable.

Can't wait to go back tomorrow!
